“Joe, Wayne and I began working together on my garden seven years ago. Not only have they given me the garden that I only dreamed of having, they have also shown care and sensitivity and have listened to me about what I wanted. While taking my garden to levels I would not have imagined possible, they are always teaching and guiding and encouraging.” – Margaret Fowler – Smithfield, Kentucky
“Working with Joe and Wayne has been an absolute delight and the results in my New England garden have been spectacular. I wouldn’t trade the experience for the world. I can’t say enough good about them.” – Richard Drubel – Hanover, New Hampshire
North Hill offers a range of service which include, On-Site Consultation, Plant Sourcing and Acquisition, Garden Installations and Long-Term Management of Garden Development.
On-Site Consultation
“We first met with North Hill after having bought a dilapidated Kentucky farm as a weekend house. We wanted general advice together with a broader plan to guide us as we began changing the property. Wayne and Joe gave us both advice and a plan – small suggestions, dramatic recommendations, and a vision that has inspired all of our later work on the property. Their plans took into consideration its natural setting, its historic and existing features, our interests, and the life of a young and growing family. We ended up with a landscape that inspires us, calms us, surprises us, and suites our own ever-changing lives.”
Stephen Reily and Emily Bingham – Henry County, Kentucky
Whether a garden is in its very first stages of conception or has enjoyed many years of established beauty, we offer a professional assessment of its needs and its future.
Even large gardens rarely require more than a day of On-Site Consultation, though that day should include an extensive conversation with the owners to determine what they wish to achieve.
If required, On-Site Consultations may be followed up by a written analysis of the garden and specific suggestions in detail.
Garden Design
“Imagine gardening comfortably on a half acre plot in suburbia for 30 years and then suddenly finding yourself with a huge piece of beautiful land to develop in rural western Massachusetts. What to do? Where to Start?
Engage Joe and Wayne. The Rescue and Resolve Team came and stayed and 14 years later there is a lush long, long border with an incredible sequence of bloom, a formal herb garden, a flowering meadow, a woodland garden, and a brand new flower garden.
There is also peace and serenity.”
Yoelene Schaefer – Ashfield, Massachusetts
Thoughtful design is crucial to the beauty of any garden, for though one may arrive at a beautiful effect by pure luck, having an idea of what one wants to achieve and a sense of how to go about it provide a surer pathway to success.
North Hill offers design services extending from master plans for extensive property management down to highly specialized segments of the larger garden, such as a woodland path, a terrace or pool area, a perennial garden, meadow garden or ornamental vegetable garden.
As, too often, landscaping is an afterthought, we are always particularly delighted when we can work with owners and architects from the very first concept of a property through to its final conclusion.
Plant Sourcing and Acquisition
Over more than 25 years of landscape practice, North Hill has forged relationships with many specialty growers throughout North America, making possible the acquisition of beautiful, well grown and often rare plants, usually at costs far lower than are available at garden centers or from local retail growers.
Because of the time and research that is required to source and acquire plants, we must limit these activities to projects on which we are the principal landscape designers.
Installation
North Hill provides on-site supervision of gardens installed to our designs, using local contractors who have previously had successful relationships with clients, or whom we locate through the recommendations of other design professionals in the area. As our primary pleasure is in making gardens, we insist on being present for supervision when the major work of installation occurs.
Our fees for garden installation are strictly limited to our time and expenses, and include no surcharges on contracted labor or the service of other professionals.
Garden Development Over Time
“If a garden has a conscience, mine surely is the combined voices of Joe and Wayne – with their wise admonitions, continuing creativity and involvement, and above all, their loving interest.
Mrs. Robert M. Nash – Prospect, Kentucky
Our most satisfying work has occurred when we have remained involved in the development of a garden over an extended period of time, visiting it seasonally and conferring with its owners to discuss its changing needs.
Such long-term relationships not only allow us to understand the garden in greater and greater depth, but also to grasp the spirit of the place, in accordance with which all good gardens must ultimately exist.
